Making a Mess... again
I'm playing with fabric dyes and paints again. Dreaming of someday having a dyers garden and trying my hand at natural dyes like Annie. For now though, I'm happy to experiment in small batches in my laundry room.
This time with strips of wool felt and some cotton folded and sewn with waxed thread. Just to see what happens.
Sometimes it's good to make a mess.

Lola Unplugged
Hello there!
Goodness me, where does the time go? I'm having a twinge of vertigo whilst looking at the calendar and realizing it is well past half of July! We finally got the go ahead on Summer with the weather turning golden on the 4th. Since then we have been well and truly Summering. So, I have "unplugged" and busied myself with the great outdoors and some wonderful times with my girl (& The Engineer when he is home from work) during the school break. I have even been so caught up in the doing and living that my camera keeps getting left behind and all I have to show are a few quick snaps from my phone!
There has been a bit of feasting from the garden...
There have been picnics in the park...
A good amount of monkeying around on playgrounds...
A quick pickle here and there...
As well as a not quite so quick bit of pickling...
There have been some super cool experiments...
Magic Ice Orbs created by putting a few drops of food coloring into a balloon, then fill the balloon with some water, tie off and freeze over night. Remove balloon and voila! Super cool!
There was a grand day at the river...
A bit of girly fun...
And a heavenly batch of home made, hand churned blackberry ice cream!
There was also a rousing family water balloon fight in the back yard and I was the winner! Well, if by winning you mean the the one who most resembled a drowned rat. And no, I haven't any photos of that.
So, forgive me if my posts are spotty, my replies and communications iffy for the next little while. This being "unplugged" is just too much fun!
I do hope that wherever you are, no matter the weather, that you too are having a bit of fun!

The Storm in the Barn
If you live, or happen to be in the Portland area April 28th - May 20th, you should go see this play! The Storm in the Barn, adapted for the stage from the beautiful graphic novel by Matt Phelan. It's at the Oregon Children's Theatre!
Musical score written by friends, Black Prairie.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Monday
I had a wonderful weekend, how about you? I was rather spoiled with crepes for breakfast and a beautiful dinner for Mother's Day courtesy of the Engineer. We spent the day pottering about the garden, I was taken to the plant nursery and told to pick out some new plants, hooray! All in all a gorgeous day with the family.
Now it's Monday and I will admit that Mondays are hard. There's the weekly occupational therapy appointment for Pony Girl, then racing to school to make it there before lunch. Then racing home to clean up the shambles of our weekend frolicking. Then the mad dash for school pick up and grocery shopping and dinner making and homework and, and...then trying to fit in a blog post as well (which always ends up a bit iffy). Still, I can't complain, I have a sweet life and after yesterday's lovely time, it's all worth it!
Unfortunately for Barbie, yesterday's Spa Day did not turn out quite as she had imagined.
May your week be filled with smiles!

Maverick Craftwork
I started a project that is a wee bit outside the norm for me. I usually make things that are useful in some way, as opposed to "just because it's awesome". There is something downright practical about me and making. That doesn't mean I don't get carried away and color outside the lines from time to time. I have ideas and they swim around in my mind occasionally making a big splash. Well, it was about time I paid attention and did something about it. I went maverick!
Not only did I go maverick but, I went multi-medium! I haven't been overly cautious, I have not plotted it all out down to the last detail, and I have let the piece guide me along. There have been messes, mistakes, wonk, and an undoing or two. Guess what, I'm loving it!
It's almost finished, I think. I'll be sure and show you when it's done. For now, I am just going to enjoy this new found freedom of expression.Have a maverick day my friends!

Fairies in the garden
Yesterday we had a beautiful break in the rain, sunshine and warm enough to go sleeveless. So, after our daily ritual of sqwirmy hunting...
we decided to build a fairy house. My girl and I repurposed a birdhouse that she and Mr. Nova built last year. It has never housed any birds and we thought that maybe the fairies would like it.
We both agreed that the best spot in the garden was under a canopy of Bleeding Hearts.

This morning the rain returned - yet, when we checked the little fairy house, there was a tiny thank you note written on a leaf!

Pause
Busy bees we are. With Spring sprung and ants in the kitchen, there seems always a race. A steady buzz - wax paper folded over comb, we press our lips against and hum. Something is coming. Along with slug season, coy pinks, dangerous yellows and the farmers market, there slips in a notion of promise. Soon the wind will sweep the avenues bringing a snow storm of blushed plum blossoms that will cling to our shoes, holding on. While the hues are almost delicate, shaded - a richness envelopes and becomes anticipation. Waiting in this verdant landscape, is a tempest in a teapot. What is simply green to some, is to me, an almost surreal abundance of color all in the name of green. I am a child of this place and I am feeling my absence from the woods. I have not walked through ferns and fans of Columbine in far too long. While I may not be able to reach my favorite trails today or make the long drive to the coastal forest, I may just take a walk in some damp wooded park. Somewhere where there is a quiet riot of new growth and moss in colors that simply make you take pause.Breathe deep.
